Kissing Gourami (Helostoma temminckii)
The Kissing Gourami is a unique and eye-catching freshwater fish, best known for its distinctive “kissing” behaviour—where individuals appear to lock lips. This isn’t affection, but a natural display of social interaction or mild territorial sparring, making them a fascinating addition to any aquarium.
Native to Southeast Asia, Kissing Gouramis feature a laterally compressed body with soft, rounded fins and a peaceful appearance. They are commonly available in pale pink (the most popular variety) as well as a natural green form. As they mature, these fish can grow quite large, reaching up to 25–30cm, so a spacious tank is essential.
Kissing Gouramis are generally semi-peaceful and do best in larger community aquariums with similarly sized fish. They are omnivores with a strong preference for plant matter and algae, often grazing on tank surfaces—making them helpful for light algae control. A varied diet of flakes, pellets, and vegetable-based foods will keep them healthy and active.
Care Summary:
With their unusual behaviour and hardy nature, Kissing Gouramis are a great choice for aquarists looking for something a little different—just be sure to provide them with plenty of space to thrive.
