The Ornate Bichir is a prehistoric-looking freshwater predator prized for its impressive size, striking pattern and unique appearance. With its dark body covered in intricate yellow and black markings, the Ornate Bichir is a true feature fish for a large aquarium.
Ornate Bichirs are generally peaceful towards fish they cannot fit in their mouths, but they are opportunistic predators and will eat smaller fish and tank mates. They are best kept with similarly sized, robust fish in a spacious aquarium.
As a nocturnal species, Ornate Bichirs are often most active during the evening and at night. They appreciate a secure aquarium with caves, driftwood and other hiding places, along with a tight-fitting lid as they are capable of escaping through surprisingly small gaps.
They can also breathe atmospheric air using a modified swim bladder, so access to the surface is important. A varied carnivorous diet including quality sinking pellets, frozen foods and suitable meaty foods will help keep them healthy and growing.
